With my CNC engraver I created a simple circuit board to emulate my TV remote. Another board could switch an SSR (solid state relay) for lighting and other low power home devices. Using simple code and a $1 ESP8266 microcontroller with wifi. It's was a simple project to learn way more than I needed to know about IR remote codes and mill some circuit boards.
